Born in the UK before 1983? Neither parents British

I was wondering if someone here can advise me. I was born in the UK in 1978. My father was a foreign student and was married to my mother at the time also a foreigner.

From what I've read anyone born in the UK before 1983 and regardless of his/her parents nationality/status is automatically British and entitled to British citizenship and a passport.

My only supporting document to my claim in my British birth certificate.

Can anyone advise if I am eligible to apply and if so just apply on through the ips.

You are not entitled to British Citizenship because you do not need to be entitled to British Citizenship because you are already a British Citizen.

You may apply for British Passport if you want to.

Ok but I'm not living in the UK I have lived abroad all my life in Bahrain. Can the British embassy here help. Or is it strictly online ie printing the forms with my original birth certificate and send it off and wait?

I will need an interview since this is my first time to apply ?

There is no question of British embassy helping or not helping. There is a procedure that has to be followed.

Just follow the procedure by clicking above link. And before you ask, there is no short cut to obtain your first passport. It will take as long as it takes, and there is no way to rush the procedure.

Ok thank you for the supportive information.

For the counter signature I will ask one of my British colleges if he or she is willing to sign.

But what about the current address? I have never lived in the UK and will they ask for my current citizenship passport ?

I suggest that you read the quidance and supporting documents guidance carefully.

You do not have to make up questions and requirements by using your brain. You just answer what they ask, and just provide the documents they ask for. Nothing more, nothing less, full stop.

Current address is current address. It could be in UK, Bahrain, Timbuktu, antarctic or Cuckooland.

I think I have a problem. On the checklist it says that they want copies on my parents immigration status ie in the form of old passports.

Sadly we don't have these documents anymore.

Evidence of one of your parents’ immigration status in the UK at the time of your birth

their passport at the time of your birth, and
if this is your father, also provide his marriage certificate to your mother.
(This does not apply for those born or adopted on or after 1 July 2006 or same- sex adoptions.)

Sadly we don't have these documents anymore and on top if that my parents are now divorced !

Anymore ideas people ?

I don't know anything about the appeal process or deadlines

Im going to do this based on some facts and a leap of faith !

But I need to do this before anymore changes are made to the British law !

There is no right to appeal for citizenship applications. He's on about appealing his 'thin ice' status, though, I'm surprised it took so long.

Lol. I'm surprised too, to be honest. Especially seeing as I was on thin ice and he wasn't!

I do think I was put on thin ice status unfairly though. It seems you're not even allowed to disagree with people on this board or its thin ice!

Hi everyone

I gathered all information possible (forms, Birth Certificates, Counter signatory etc) and sent it off via courier.

Tracking shows it was received on 6th Sept at HM Passport Office in Liverpool.....so now its time to wait and see what happens.

The thing is im applying outside the UK as previously mentioned in the initial posts.

Has anyone here applied for citizenship/passport outside the UK?

Hi everyone

I noticed on my bank statement that the passport office has debited the authorized amount for a first UK passport.

Obviously this means that my application will go ahead for processing which is a start.

Now i wonder what the next step is?

Today i received in the mail my supporting documents:

British birth certificate and my picture with the counter signatory signature on the back.

Also included was a message:

"Your passport application is being processed"

"The documents submitted in support of your application have been noted and are enclosed"

So how far are we in the process?
