Need advice on a job

Post by InUkOnHsmp » Mon Feb 18, 2008 2:47 pm

Hi Forum,

I have received an offer from a company in the greater manchester area. Its a permanent job with offered salary being 27k per annum.

There are not much benefits for the first year of employment, except a life cover. My profile in 5 years in C++ Windows/Unix.

I want senior members advice on a couple of points:

1) Is 27k a decent salary for the Manchester area?
2) This is my first job offer, and I have been in the Uk for a relatively short time, is it advisable for me to ignore this offer and look for better ones?
3) how to go about finding contract jobs, as I have heard they pay almost 2-3 times this amount an year?
4) what aspects to look in the benefits package in a permanent job?
5) How is the IT industry in the manchester area, as my wife is also looking for a job.
6) An estimate on the living costs in the manchester area would also help a great deal.

Any other relevant inputs which might help me make an educated decision on this one.

Regards

27 K is very less buddy..After tax you will get 1600 Per month...U will end up spending 1200 as expenses...
But till u get a better job, take it,at least you will survive on this..Switch once u get a better paying job..

I agree, contracting is more but there are risks that don't suit everybody.

Manchester is crap for IT, Leeds is the place - loads of work here! And I live in Manchester...

Thanks for your responses.

Ashish, lets say i get a better job in 2-3 months, would the companies be worried why i am switching so soon?

I have heard that unlike india in the UK companies do care about frequent job switches, and I might find hard finding a job so soon after joining my first company.

How true is this?

About Leeds, I have not been seeing many job adverts for the Leeds area, dont know why.

Regards

Well, its upto you..IF u r really getting good offers now, then u can wait for a better offer. But if u think that u r running out of time (and money) u can grab this one and switch once u get a better one...Hmm, yes switching frequently looks bad on CV but again its very relative...
Bottom line is if the other compnay wants you ,they wont bother abt. your jump etc,but dont jump too frequently...India,UK,US :rules are same..
