Is it worth to travel by your own car?

Post by serggry » Tue Feb 26, 2008 10:48 am

Dear colleagues,

One of the last questions.

Is worth to travel to the UK by a car. It is about 2000 km far from me. It is cheaper than travel by air by 50%. But is'nt too costly to have car in the UK?

Can someone explain what are costs of parking, insurance, taxes etc.
It is a small car but i am not sure.

Sincerely,
Serggry

In your country, which side of the road do you drive on? Probably best not to attempt to drive all that way, unless in your country you drive on the left-hand side of the road. That is, for safety reasons, probably best not to bring a car to the UK if you drive on the right-hand side of the road in your country.

Also, your route to the UK? You would need to obtain say a Schengen visa to drive across "Schengenland" to the French coast? And in calculating your costs, have you taken into account the coast of crossing or going under the English Channel?

Another aspect

I see your concerns.

But I am not going to travel in the UK. Just to get their and be mobile initially.
Cost of Schengen visa is 35 Euros. I know about this.

You have mentioned the underground channel. What is the price for crossing it?

But I am more concerned with cost of having a car in the UK.. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Serggry

MOT- around 60 pounds per year
Road tax - around 150 pounds per year
Insurance - 50 pounds per month

And your repairs.

luxury?

Post by karupalli » Mon Mar 03, 2008 1:04 pm

luxury... depends how you look at it...

If you are with your wife, car travel is cheaper than train. you can not travel in car in central london because of other charges(congestion charge and parking charge)... But in other places it is nice to have car and worksout cheaper (compared to other modes of travel).

second hand cars in UK are quite cheap, since so many people always want to be driving the latest and greatest cars and sell regularly.

parking fines = £0 if you dont park illegally.

MOT (annual check that the car is road worthy/meets minimum standards for pollution etc) last week was £45

petrol outside london is below £1/litre if you use the big supermarkets for petrol.

my 2.5litre petrol car is £37/mth for full insurance. And that was me being new to the UK without a UK licence.

as with anything in life...shop around

hsmp'ers do do quite well, if they come and do a highly skilled job...

Is it? where outside London? Certainly here in the West Midlands the price at Sainsburys when I filled up this morning was 101.9p per litre for unleaded.

But prices do vary around the country. Can anyone report petrol below £1 per litre?
