Apply with national identity card rather than passport

Post by muraenidae » Fri Jan 19, 2018 3:28 pm

I am German and will be applying for naturalisation (after 5 + 2 years permanent residence).

I need my passport to travel regularly. Is it possible to instead send my national identity card (as it was for the permanent residence application)? Or is my only option to pay for the NCS to get my passport back immediately?

Thanks!

As an EU citizen you are under no obligation to have a passport in order to live in the UK, so I don't see why your EU id card should not be accepted for naturalization.

Page 28 of the AN application form list documents to validate your identity:

"SECTION 1 Evidence of identity: required for all applications
• *Your passport Or
• *National identity card Or"
some other documents.

Thanks both! The part I worry about, in form AN:

SECTION 3 Evidence of lawful residence during the 5 (or, if the applicant is married or in
civil partnership to a British citizen, 3) years before the date of the application: required for
applications made on the basis of residence in the United Kingdom: required for all applicants
• Your passports Or
• Letters from employers, educational establishments or other Government Departments
indicating presence in UK

Not that my passport would give any evidence of this though, as it is not stamped when I enter or leave the country!

As you are an EU citizen you won't have stamps in/out in your passport.
Use employee letters, P60, etc. If you ahve been with an employer for most of the time then a letter is easiest. In my case one employer over 10 years, one letter,no issues.
