Parent of a Tier 4 - UK House purchase

Can a parent who will arrive in the UK on a Parent of a Tier 4 (child) Visa who's child is 8 legally purchase a house in the UK (no finance required) whilst still maintaining their main home outside the UK?

Are there any restrictions on the purchase if permitted? Or do they have to rent?

At the moment anyway, someone's immigration status has no bearing on buying a property in the UK.
