British grandmother. Naturalized British father. How can I get citizenship?

Post by bonobos15 » Sun Dec 23, 2018 8:24 pm

I'm an American man living in the US. My father just got his British passport because his mother (still alive, living in the US) is British. What's the best way for me to go about getting a passport?

I also have a British girlfriend and we're thinking of moving back there at some point soon. Not sure if that has any impact. Thanks all!

In addition to cyclina1's question, how old are you? The advice below is predicated on your father being born outside the UK and you being older than 18 years of age.

If you are over the age of 18, there is no direct part for you to acquire British citizenship based on your British ancestry.

That would also have been the case if your father was a British citizen by descent at your birth, as generally British citizenship can only be inherited one generation outside the UK.

If your British grandmother was born in the UK (including Ireland before 1922), then you can apply for an Ancestry visa, which gives you the right to work in the UK for five years and then naturalise as a British citizen.

Does the applicant need to be a Commonwealth Citizen before he can apply for the Ancestry visa route?

USA is not a commonwealth country and therefore excluded from Ancestry Visas

Good point. I do keep forgetting about the Commonwealth citizenship requirement for Ancestry visa. The OP is out of luck for any option of inheriting any advantage to British residency due to his British ancestry.
