ESOL skills for life Certificate - Naturalisation

Post by sally1 » Fri Sep 12, 2008 5:00 am

For natrulisation purposes, Is it correct that if you have the ESOL Skills for Life Cert you DO NOT need to sit the Life in UK Test?

Was it a ESOL skills for life with citizenship? If it didn't mention citizenship then I think you still need to take the Life in the UK test.

Essentially yes. Details are here on the BIA's naturalisation web pages, which say (in part):
If you do not have English skills at ESOL Entry 3 or above, you need to take an ESOL course to demonstrate your knowledge of language and life in the United Kingdom.

You must take a course which includes citizenship materials. The course will allow you to gain sufficient knowledge of the United Kingdom at the same time as developing your knowledge of the English language. Before you apply for citizenship, you will need to show that you have moved up from one ESOL level to the next. You will need to provide evidence of this as part of your application.
Colleges offering the ESOL course should be well aware of all of this and of the requirements; if they are not, one probably needs to find another college...

Skills for Life isn't the same as the ESOL Citizens content course. My husband attended a council run Adult Education ESOL course for several months before they finally admitted that they weren't providing the correct course. Skills for Life won't be accepted for either ILR or BC, and you'll either need to pass the Life in the UK test or attend the relevant ESOL course.

spoke to HO helpline number today explained i had the level 1 ESOL Speaking and listening skills for life certificate and they said
"as long as the ESOL certificate states SKILLS FOR LIFE, than that is sufficient and there would be no need to do the test"
I am confused - please help clarify
Thanks again
