5 months gap for ILR app - what are my chances?

Hi

I have a 5 months gap for my ILR application. I spent those doing fieldwork for my doctoral studies, without which I couldn't do my degree. Could this be considered a compassionate reason? What are the chance the Home Office will look favorably at my condition?
