Keep my passport and travel to UK : spouse visa

I dont know if this has been asked before but i will be applying UK spouse visa from Pakistan,
I have visit visa to UK, can i keep my passport during the application
But the most important question can i travel to UK while my spouse visa is in process because i will have my passport
