Post by nathybes » Tue Feb 09, 2021 10:54 am

Hi! I’ve just got my ILR (SET O). Can I apply for benefits now or should I wait a bit longer? Thanks

You can apply for benefits if you qualify.

You can use a benefits calculator to see if your incomes are low enough to have any welfare benefits, but these benefit calculators only work if your dependants have ILR too.
Here is one of them- https://www.turn2us.org.uk/
With a claim for the welfare benefit Universal Credit, both parents are required to work to keep their children unless they have an excemption.

If your dependants don't have settlement yet, you might be able to have some benefits but you have to be careful to ensure you don't take extra benefit money for them.

Note that some of the welfare benefits they talk about, have been replaced by the one, low income welfare benefit called Universal Credit.

Universal Credit is replacing the welfare benefits called-

Child Tax Credit
Housing Benefit
Income Support
income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
Working Tax Credit
