Depends completely on the sector, job profile, city you work in and benefits the company gives you.
But for a 5 yr exp person in the software sector, the lowest would be around 24k to 28k and highest would be around 40k to 45k. Based on the city, getting 40k in London is as good as 30k in a medium city elsewhere and maybe lower in parts of Scotland.
This is just to provide a rough picture to guage your standing. Remember, bonus potential, many personal benefits, extra perks like on call allowance, pension, insurance, cars, gas, vouchers etc can have a huge say on the actual cash you get in hand.

Cheers

Cheese, 28 k, not much for living in London, no? Can you survive on that?

28k in london ?

cut out some 25% for tax, which leaves you with 21k.

now rent in london is like minimum of 800-1000 pcm.

so 10k goes off for rent.

and council tax is like 1700 pa.
electricity depends but minimum around 700 pa.
water another 400 per annum
telephone some 150 per annum

so another 3k max will go on utilities.

so 21-10-3= 8k

i dont know how much the NI would be.. again pension... assuming you pay atleast 3k for NI per annum, pension 0, you will endup with 5000 pounds.

Travel = depends on where you live.

so 5000 is not too bad huh ?
if you dont eat anything through the year, its a bonus.

I think you boys need to read very carefully before commenting :-)

The overall range is what was presented, and such a wide range is because of the different factors a major one being the city you are working in.
Also, there are many who get 28k for a job in London and that includes the locals too!
Dont ever dream of living in London with any sort of salary, well if you get 70k plus then fine, because you can lead a good one. The rest travel from nearby towns of greater London which are great to live in and takes about 20mins to 40mins to get into the city. Traveling in Europe is nothing like the Asian countries. Most people travel close to an hour to work and cover huge distances and don't break a sweat. Traveling is not difficult out here.

So if you are a guy with 5 yrs plus exp and are unfortunate to get about 28k and that too in London, dont worry you wont do bad.

Even if u save only £500 in your first year but have a good job in the UK in this economic situation, consider yourself lucky. And let me repeat, 28k is definitely low but people with maybe 2 or 3 yrs exp cant expect more than 35k in any city in this climate.

Cheers

Hmmm I'd say in banking in Central London you'll probably be earning between 40K and 60K. In any other sector in Central London, more like 25K to 40K. In the regions, maybe 20K to 35K.
With the market in its current state (10s or 100s of applications for every job), you should probably be looking at the lower-mid end of these ranges to be honest.
