Could someone please shed some light on whether it is possible to apply for shared ownership scheme, in order to buy equity in a house.

I have read that I would need ILR.

Yes it possible, this is not one of the public funds.

Your local HA may have its own rules though. e.g. you have to be in the social housing list, which obviously you cannot do.
