Harbouring an illegal immigrant!

If you write a letter for an illegal immigrant to say that they are living with you because they need proof of address, can this cause problems for you legally? Are there likely to be repercussions? Especially if it is not your native country and you have a residence card? Living in France, strange question but would appreciate any input!
