PIO or tourist visa for new baby

Post by PG1983 » Fri Jul 01, 2011 12:47 pm

We are planning to travel to India in Oct with our new baby. Mom and baby will then stay there till March next year.

He's been born after we have been granted ILR so I've applied for British passport for him. Now my question is: since I can't apply for OCI for him(we both still have Indian passport), should I apply for tourist visa for him for 6 months. I can then include him in my OCI application when I get my British passport next year. Will the HCI grant 6 month visa? It is a big risk because I will need to apply very close to travel date in Oct to cover 6 month stay.

OR should I get a PIO card for him. This will probably be a safer bet in terms of dates.
PIO will be much more expensive and I will have to apply for OCI for him eventually, so double the expense really.

Any advice?

Visa will be definitely a cheaper option but remember re-entry is not allowed within 2 months of its expiry.
With a child I will suggest a conservative approach, hence PIO, you should also get it earlier, hence easy to plan travel.

I don't think the re-entry is a problem as once they go in Oct they're going to stay till March and we're not planning to go again anytime soon.

I have got the British passport for the baby now. I have decided that since PIO card is £112 for minors, I will apply for that.

Dear PG1983,
Did you finally apply for PIO card ? How long would it take to get the PIO card ? any details appreciated as I am planning to apply for my new born baby PIO card and planning to go to India on holiday in december.
Cheers,

I did apply for PIO card for my son, and it was ready for collection in abt 3 weeks. I applied in person at HCI London. Make sure you have all the documents and photocopies i.e application form, baby's passport, parent's passports, birth certificate, passport photos etc, all with photocopies.

Hi PG1983,

I did apply for PIO on 08/Dec and they have given me collection date of 29/Dec. but our travel date is 30/Dec.

So, bit confused if I I should rely on HCL or get his visa done as I have all the originals with me.

Thanks,
Gagan

If you collect the PIO on 29th, then it shouldn't be an issue to travel on the 30th. The only worry might be that if they make a mistake on the card then you won't have enough time to get that corrected. I didn't have a problem with mine nor did I see anyone else that day getting a mistake but you might wish to be extra careful and get a Visa too.

My advise would be trust the HCI.
