RE: Tourist Visa Options

Hi All,

Question: My brother in law is over in the UK from Brazil.

His tourist visa expires at the end of April. He would like to stay in the uk longer.

Is it possible to get an extension on a tourist visa? If not, would the best option available be to fly out to somewhere in Europe (maybe Ireland) in the next few weeks and then come back to the UK so he is stamped with another 6 month tourist visa?

If you have any thoughts, advice or ideas on the above please do post a reply.

Not possible to extend a tourist visa in these circumstances and hopping out and hopping in is fraught with risk, as the IO my decide ur BIL is not a genuine visitor and bounce him, thereby causing him to have to apply for a visa formally in the future (and almost certain refusal)

Six months in every twelve is the rule.

He could go to Ireland before his 6 months expires - on his return he would then be deemed to have a further 3 months but he would have no stamp in his passport to help him prove he had not overstayed when he eventually embarks.

Thanks for the replys so far - Wanderer - what do yu mean by 6 months in every 12 is the rule? .. is this an official rule? ...or a generalisation?

I will be travelling with him and my wife (I'm english) - we are actually planning a vaction in europe at the end of March - as far as I've experienced, he would usually be stamped with another 6 moth tourist visa upon retuning to the UK? True?

Remember the IO will being applying the term 'genuine visitor' - where's the line between visiting and effectively living?
