transit visa

I am joining my wife in ireland who is british citizen, i met my wife in uk and we were blessed with two children, since i was afraid to apply spouse visa due my immigration history of being in uk illigally and hence decided to use eu route. my question is if i apply transit visa for uk is there any chance of getting it, also because my wife will come for me and travel together to ireland do i have to pay for that transist visa?
