transition from green card to spouce visa

I am an Australian working in Ireland, currently half way through my first 2 year green card permit. I have met an Irish man and am hoping to marry him before my visa expires in march 09. My employer has indicated that he would extend my working visa (he doesnt know that I am considering marrying). Does anybody know the best way to transition between a working authorisation and a spouse visa? Once I apply for a spouce visa, do I lose my right to a working visa until it is processed?

Is any of this effected by whether we are married in Ireland or abroad?

I have had a bit of a look throught the posted topics and couldnt see anything addressing this issue so far.
