translations for US embassy.

Hello all.
Myself and my fiance have applied for a fiance visa a couple of weeks ago.
She is living in the US. I am Irish living in the UK.
One of my police certificates is from Germany.
Does anyone have experience regarding the translation of such a document.
I've heard a competent bi-linguist can translate as long as he\she signs it etc.
I'm hoping this is the case as any way to save throwing more money at the process , ie a translator(i can actually do it myself)would be most welcome.
Has anyone been to such an interview for a fiance visa?

I applied for adjustment of status in the US and had to translate birth cirtificate: I translated it myself and had university language professor review, stamp and sign it.
