Travel on ireland on UK Work Permit

Post by n_sharma50 » Thu Nov 01, 2007 5:58 pm

All,

Please can you tell me if I can travel to Ireland for 2 days on my UK Work permit?

If not what do I need to do?

Thanks

What country are you from? If you would normally need a visa to visit Ireland then you would still need a visa. Your UK work permit does not enable you to travel to other EU countries visa-free if you would ordinarily need a visa.

Does the visa rule also apply when one has a UK EEA FP, and wishes to go to Ireland for a short break?

Basically no. UK EEA FP is an entry permit into the UK, after which you apply for a Residence Card.

An EEA FP and a UK issued Residence Card are both solid indicators that you are the family member of an EU citizen. But Ireland still says you require a visa.

That said, if you have proof that you are married to your EU citizen spouse, and are travelling with the spouse, then they are required to let you in even if you do not have a visa. But you will need to go well prepared and expect them to be very stroppy.

Legal issues aside, it is physically possible to fly to Belfast or other Northern Ireland airport and subsequently cross the land border into the Republic, possibly without even noticing you've done so.

Have a read through this article before you think of entering ROI from N.Ireland.
