travel without BRP

I'm still waiting for my BRP (applied PEO Liverpool on 18th Jan), but my flight to China is on saturday. My current visa expires in April, and I didn't know UKBA would make my old visa invalid as soon as they give me a new visa. I"m just wondering if i can travel back in UK with my old visa and the letter stating that I've got a new visa? Anyone has been in the similar situation? Thanks!
