Travelling abroad

Post by kp1 » Tue Sep 06, 2005 2:36 pm

If you have ILR and you trave abroad, would the BHC in that country helpyou/treat you/acknowledge you in the same way as a BC, say for eg if there was a crisis in that country or an emergency etc?

I suppose what i am trying to ask is what are the benefits outside the UK(if any) of having an ILR in the UK

Even though you have ILR, remember you are a citizen first so the country whose passport you hold should give you assistance, not the UK, until you become a BC.

KP1, Smit is right. The ultimate proof of that is that whilst all the British Citizen detainees in Guantanamo Bay have been moved back to the UK, the handful of other nationalities who had UK ILR visas are still languishing there in Cuba.

Basically the British Government has made it clear that it will make no representations on their behalf.

Edit : I have just thought of a benefit overseas of having ILR .... you are entitled to enter Switzerland visa-free! That is, Switzerland recognises some other countries' visas, and that includes UK ILR ones.
