Travelling on expired IRP

Post by karthikm15 » Wed Aug 21, 2024 12:26 pm

Hi All,

I was an Indian national. I got naturalized in Ireland recently. I am still waiting to receive the citizenship cert to apply for Irish passport.

I would have to travel to India due a family emergency in next day or two. I have valid Indian passport. However my irp card expires before I come back.

I really have to fly home at this time . What are my best options to come back to Ireland without a valid IRP?

Can I travel back with my citizenship cert + expired irp?

Ask the airline that you plan to travel with, if they recognise your citizenship cert + expired irp for boarding and travelling to Ireland. If they say yes, then get it in writing, preferably signed by a senior member of airline’s staff on their official letterhead stationary. Then hope for the best.

To be on the safe side, go to Burgh Quay very early in the day and ask to speak to someone in the Citizenship department to obtain a re-entry visa. Airlines are being fined heavily for allowing travellers who don't have permission. See viewtopic.php?p=2044798#p2044798 for a similar experience.

Thanks for highlighting a practical solution.
