PSW remainder deferral

If a person has had 1 year IGS expiring oct 08, but wants to go to home country for one year, can i apply for PSW (remaining 1 yr) after one year in home country or must it be applied for now or lost?

As far I understand you need to apply in Oct 08, otherwise u will lose it.
