Academic reference

I'm a BSc graduate with over 5 years of experience and I got an offer for a MSc from a UK university. Usually many of the universities ask for academic and professional references. But I submitted only the service letters I obtained from my work places, they gave me the offer. Is it necessary for me to have an academic reference and a professional reference to apply for the visa?

References are (sometimes) requested by the Universities when applying for the programme of your choice, these are not required to apply for a Student visa.
