Tier 4 Visa Transit

Hello everyone, do I need to get a transit visa while traveling to the UK. I plan to travel to Durham International airport, there is no direct flight except I need to transit in European countries such as Latvia, France, Netherlands, Poland, etc., depending on the airline.

My question is, will I be able to transit at those countries without a visa?
P.S, I am not an EU member by passport (Nigerian) living in Ukraine with permanent residence.

I am asking this question because my brother just traveled to Canada last week and we bought him a ticket from Ukraine to the USA, then the USA to Canada since that was the cheapest ticket for that day, when we arrived at the airport, they didn't allow him, they said he needed a visa to the US even though he will just be transiting there within 6 hours. Before we bought the ticket, the ticket officers said he doesn't need a visa to transit in the USA.

As long as you don't leave the airport (immigration control) there is no need for transit visa.
