Underpaid tax issue

Post by soraya2000 » Fri Nov 29, 2024 10:49 am

Hi,

I have applied for UK naturalisation and am awaiting the outcome.

This week, I received an email from HMRC stating they have recalculated my taxes for the 2023/2024 tax year, and I owe around £1,000, payable by 5 March 2025.

This is partly because my former employer submitted the P11D (benefit in kind tax information) later this year, and also due to interest earned from my savings accounts, which HMRC collected from the banks later this year. I am currently unemployed, so they could not deduct it from my salary.

Should I pay this now, or is it safe to wait until the 5 March deadline? I do not want my naturalisation application to be rejected for "not paying tax." Could the caseworker consider this debt as grounds for refusal, even mistakenly?

Thanks.

If you are complying with arrangements you make with HMRC then there's no issue.
Tax adjustments happen frequently, a fact of life even for me, and no offence.
HMRC are giving you a payment target, so you will comply with it.
"Not paying your taxes" relates to geting into real trouble with HMRC up to being taken to court, especially for tax evasion.
This is just my opinion as a member of this forum and does not constitute immigration advice.
