Update in Austria

Post by ejw4h9 » Tue Aug 25, 2009 3:34 pm

I just wanted to update the forum on my situation and to possibly aid anyone that is going to move to Austria. I'm an American citizen and was trying to stay here to help plan my May wedding to an Austrian national. I went through all possible options and spoke to as many government officials that we could get on the phone, meet with, or email. After talking it over, it was recommended that we have our civil ceremony first and apply for a family residence permit for me here (national laws) and then plan a religious wedding for May. We were also told that I am allowed to stay from the date I registered with the police here even if my entry date as a tourist would expire. I'm not sure this is legal or not...though I'm assuming it's less than legal. The official assured me that there was nothing wrong with this and that all should be well. The man I spoke with will be the one to approve my application for residency and invited me to make an appointment with him to look things over to make sure it's complete before I "officially" turn it into him...which will be at the same meeting. He guaranteed a 4 to 5 week turnaround time which will be before I go home for a short holiday.

Advice for those seeking residence in Austria as a spouse/family member:
Speak to the people who will approve/deny your application in your particular state! Information online is a bit conflicting at times and very few government offices, though at times friendly, will know what to do/where to go. Each state here handles residency applications...nothing is sent to Vienna. Shop around for translation services of documents...there are a number of official translators and we were quoted differently for the same documents. I'll keep everyone posted!

I'm not sure anyone is terribly interested in my story, but it's a pet peeve of mine when people ask for advice and never follow up! So, I thought I'd let you all know that I received my residence/work permit (Aufenhaltstitel) today! Looks like I'm going out for a celebratory drink tonight! It is quite a relief to have this portion of the immigration situation done! I can't say it enough...thanks to all that advise on this board, you've been a huge help!
