Yes expired BRPs can be used are acceptable until the date you found out.

I understand everyone with a BRP card expiring on 31-12-2024 received an email from UKVI confirming card validity until March 2025, so the card can be used to travel internationally and re-enter the UK until that date.

That email can be used as an additional evidence for any uninformed carrier staff.
