Urgent Question - Expired Passport

Posting for a friend, can some gurus help.

Visa expiring - This Saturday
All docs ready, however passport is already expired (oversight).
Passport renewal appointment - This Thursday.
Passport renewal time: 2 weeks.

Now there are 2 ways to go forward. One is apply before Saturday, with old passport and a covering letter explaining that the new passport will be sent in a a weeks time by the time the biometrics are done.

The other option is wait till the passport comes and apply within the 28 days of expiry of visa.

Can someone please suggest which way is more safer.

Safest way is to apply with the old passport before Saturday option.

Given passports no longer have a visa placed in them and everything is granted via the BRP it MIGHT even be technically possible to have a successful application with an expired passport. Going to ask a man who knows

Still go for Saturday option with the letter explaining the valid passport is to be supplied.
The caseworker guidance is designed for them to consider the implications of return IF refused. There are certain countries it is a pointless exercise trying to return people to even with an expired travel document. While others can be exited on an EU letter.
