Notary public equivalent in the UK?

Post by global gypsy » Fri Jul 06, 2007 3:40 pm

I have a quick question that I am hoping someone here can help me with.

I need to get a few documents (for US immigration) notarized by a notary public. I realize 'Notary public' is an American term. What is the equivalent term used in the UK? Just wanted to make sure I go to the right person to certify these documents.

Your help is much appreciated.

There is no English equivalent, but you can get notarised copies made by either a solicitor or a notary (an English notary is not quite the same thing as a US notary public). Check the link "Find a Notary" at the website of the Notaries Society. Some of them offer this service. Otherwise you may contact a solicitor, as I did a couple of years ago when I needed certified copies of my passport.
