Hello,

I will be travelling from England directly to Germany in a few months, and I wanted to know if I will have to go through German immigration? I'm sorry if it's a silly question, but I have never done this, before, and I only read that I'd have to clear customs since England is an EU country, but hasn't signed the agreement. (nothing on clearing immigration) I ask this mainly because I wanted to purchase a one way ticket to England and then purchase an onward, one way ticket to Germany. (I'm not sure if I will leave Germany during mid-March or the beginning of April) and wanted wait to purchase a one way return ticket.

Would this be too much of an issue to risk? I already know how British immigration is, but not German. Ideally, it makes more sense, but I'm afraid that it will turn out to be a disaster.

(By the way, I will be in England for 3 weeks in December, and then Germany for the rest of my stay, which will be about 2 1/2 months if I leave in March) I also read that the 3 month stay continues over to the next country?? (which doesn't really make much sense)

Yes, as the UK is not part of Schengen.

He isn't my family by law or by blood, unfortunately. He is a British citizen who is currently living and studying in Germany. We planned to go back together and I was going to wait to purchase my return ticket.

In general it is likely not an issue. If you have a credit card then you can purchase a ticket out. Or choose to take the train to Paris. Or take a bus to....

Having a money and a north american passport means you are not likely to have problems.

Well, another idea we had, was to go through Holland. Get a one way to Holland and go over the border.

Entry to the Schengen zone will be (or rather should be) exactly the same no matter what route you take. As a non-visa national, you will not require a visa in advance.

You will however require to have sufficient funds, etc, etc.

I know that I will not require a visa. I know what I need to provide. What I am asking, is will I have trouble getting into Germany with a one way ticket? Has anyone tried getting into Germany, as a visitor, with a one way ticket, and didn't have any trouble?

I actually have not purchased any tickets, yet. What is your suggestion? I was planning to purchase a one way to England, then purchase a one way to Germany, and just present the onward Germany ticket to British immigration.

For some countries, a condition of visa waiver is that one has a return ticket? Is that what you are worried about?

I would not recommend that you purchase a one way ticket from North America and then expect to be admitted anywhere in Europe (including the UK).

If I have an onward ticket to Germany, then why would the UK care about whether not I have a return? Isn't it their job to make sure I leave the country? Well, my onward ticket to Germany would be my documented proof, would it not?
