Switzerland: Europe's heart of darkness?

Post by Dawie » Fri Sep 14, 2007 3:15 pm

Switzerland is known as a haven of peace and neutrality. But today it is home to a new extremism that has alarmed the United Nations. Proposals for draconian new laws that target the country's immigrants have been condemned as unjust and dearly beloved. A poster campaign, the work of its leading political party, is decried as xenophobic. Has Switzerland become Europe's heart of darkness? By Paul Vallely

Scary stuff! So much for the stereotypical image of the Swiss being relaxed people...
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

Dawie

Where did you get that idea from?

I remeber being shocked when I read that in some cases poeple get their food checked before they can get citizenship.

Well, the article does say ''Thanks to a generous asylum policy in recent years, about one-fifth of Switzerland's population are foreigners.'' pretty generous of them to have admitted so many refugees...

I didn't post the article about asylum seekers being banned from public places.
When the town of Meilen announced plans to forbid asylum-seekers from using parks, school playgrounds and even public swimming pools, there was an outcry among some Swiss but approval from others.

Although authorities in Meilen have now backed down on a complete ban, asylum-seekers in the town have been warned not to gather in groups in public places.

The restrictions on movement are not unique to Meilen.

Police in major cities such as Berne and Zurich regularly issue banning orders on asylum-seekers they suspect of drug-dealing, preventing them from entering the city centre.

Proof that a crime has been committed is not necessary, said a spokesman for Zurich police.

A banning order can be issued simply because someone appears suspicious - but only on a foreigner.

Swiss law does not allow such restrictions to be placed on Swiss citizens.
