Marrying an EU Citizen

Post by robyngrobler » Thu Feb 07, 2008 1:44 pm

Hi Everyone

I am presently in Germany, having come in on a Schengen visa and have now secured a job offer at a hospital. However, the authorities here want me to go back to South Africa (my native country) to apply for my work permit from there. I am worried that should this take too long, the job may be lost/ the entire situation a beareucratic nightmare. Should my partner and I marry while I am here, will that allow me residency? Or do I still have to leave the country?

Many thanks

If you marry under these circumstances your marriage will be viewed as one 'of convenience' and will not grant you the right to live in the EU.

How long have you lived with your partner?

We have only lived together since I got to Germany a month ago- prior to that we were doing long distance for a a year while I finished my medical studies in SA. Flying back is going to be costly and most inconvenient, but may be the only option if you say our marriage will be viewed as one of 'convenience' (though that saying in itself is pretty ironic!!)
