Self-sufficient meanings and private medical insurance

Post by tychen888 » Tue May 06, 2008 12:27 pm

I am a Chinese national and my wife is a British national. We just arrived in Sweden as the free movement of persons. We know we can settle in any member state without holding employment if we have sufficient money for our upkeep. Now the problem is that we don't know how we can prove that sufficient money. Now the problem is that the Migration boards asked us we need the proof of a private health insurance in order to apply for a resident card, but it is not easy to purchase a private health insurance without a resident card. Does anybody have experience about it?

You may or may not find it cheaper to take out medical insurance in Europe.

100,000 euro is more than enough. They can only ask you to have as much as somebody on social assistance would have.

We know 100,000 EURO 100,000 euro is more than enough. We just want to know if the Swedish Migration Board accept the bank statements and the proof of the private medical insurance from China or they just accept the bank statements from their own country.

If they do not accept it, then immediately contact Solvit for help in resolving the issue. http://eumovement.wordpress.com/help-eu-solvit/

The Sweedish are not allowed to be more restrictive than what is in Directive 2004/38/EC. And that says nothing about where the money is located. I would however expect to have to provide a translation of the bank statements and medical insurance documentation.

Thanks for the answer from "Directive/2004/38/EC". Could you please tell us again if we are eligible for applying for personal ID (social security) number ? Because without this number,we can't open a bank account in Sweden. A policeman told me that I am entitled to begin working immediately as the family member of an EU national, but I am wondering if I need to do something before I start working even I am the family member of an EU national.

What exactly are you concerned about?

Your EU spouse can immediately open a bank account with their EU passport. You may or may not be able to on the same day as arrival, but I suspect you can once you have applied for a Residence Card.
