apply for Schengen Visa in person??

Hello All, I'm new to this site :D I hope someone can answer my question.

Both my husband and I need to apply for a Schengen Visa at the Consulate of Italy/Greece for a holiday. Can one of us go to apply in person representing both of us? Or do we both have to go in person?
