Visit visas Type-C are issued under EU law,
the name is misleading, because the EU family
member can still apply for long term residence while on C-Visa
Issued either on single or multi-entry basis,
valid for anything between the duration of planned
visit or upto 5 years in a case of multi-entry C-visas.
However the Germans usually only issue single entry
for the duration of planned visit.
Each stay max 90 days, however during this stay
you can still apply for long term residence.
The Document requirements to submit to obtain the visa
are supposed to be limited to both passports, and proof of
family link, such as marriage cert.
But the German Embassy mostly violate this EU law, and often
request much more e.g. hotel bookings, utility bills, invitation letters.
Long term Class-D visas are issued under German National Law,
for each stay of more than 90 days.
Sorry, I don't know the detailed rules and conditions for
German Class-D visas.
If the objective is long term residence, it really doesn't
matter if you apply for Class-C or Class-D visa
