Visiting friends in Switzerland as a Non-EU national

Post by DH41 » Fri Oct 08, 2010 12:47 pm

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum and I have a couple of questions regarding the topic. Any help would be appreciated!

I'm a Chinese national and currently holding a Post-Study-Work Visa since I just graduated from Uni this summer. Me and my friends are planning to go ski in Switzerland this new year and we are going to stay in his parents house there.

Problem is I'm not employed at the moment nor I'm a student any more. Would I be eligible to apply for a Swiss Visa?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very very much!

May be (very) difficult as you will have to show sufficient financial means and the intent to return. How do you plan to prove that?

I do have quite a bit of savings (a few thousand pounds) in my bank account so bankstatmentwise there's not much problem I guess.

As for the intent to return, apart from return flights, I can also provide my flat contract which last until next June. I'm also applying for graduate jobs at the moment so if I get an offer before this New Year will that be sufficient enough? If I didn't get any offer, I could always write a Cover Letter of some sorts explaining my will to come back and to settle in Scotland?

Cheers 86ti!

I do not think that they would be much impressed by a cover letter. What you need is hard facts. A rental contract may not mean too much either. Property on the other hand would be a much stronger argument. Best would be to find a job (or maybe have a binding job contract) beforehand. For the accomodation in Switzerland you will probably also need an invitation from your friend's parents.

And BTW, you are not by any chance female? That could make it difficult too.

Haha I tend to be fairly polite on forums, did that make me sound feminine? I'm slightly worried.. On a curious note though, why would it be more difficult for girls?

Think about it: young female with no obvious ties (no work) to the country of residence (and/or the original country) wants to visit a 'friend'... Not sure how the Swiss are but in some other countries the alarm bells would be ringing. Of course, you could construct similar thoughts for young people in general.
