Schengen visa for Spain rejected.

I'm not sure how many of the other members have been denied Spain schengen visa from UK.
I alongwith my 2 other mates who are on a valid student visa had applied for schengen visa Spain on 21st Mar (VFS London).
I'm on a Tier 2 visa and had already got a Swiss schengen visa in 2009.

The problem is with my friends who are on a student visa.
Their visa is rejected.Not sure what exactly is the reason.

I got the txt confirmation from the VFS that the visa is processed and is ready for collection.
Called the customer centre but they're unable to comment on it.

They say the only way is to appeal in a court.Which is quite unrealistic when someone is travelling in 2 wks time.
*The next avl visa appointment date is after 40 days.

On the date of application the visa officer in VFS scrutinised all the documents one by one.
And also we asked her to confirm if the bank balance & stmts are acceptable or not.
We have no clue on what grounds they've rejected them.

Now all the flight bookings done,hotel bookings done,leaves taken.
And such a disaster..

Is there any way we can find out on what grounds they're rejected ?
Can they apply for a France Schengen meanwhile?

Any suggestions are highly appreciated..
