my wife has UK spouse visa. I am BC.
We would like to go to Portugal for a holiday.
Can we apply directly via embassy so we can avoid VFS? cant' stand them!

Looks like the only way to apply for visa through Portugal
consulate in UK is via VFS. However if your plan to travel won't go beyond October 31st, 2019 (possible no deal Brexit), you can head to Spanish consulate and apply for a Schengen visa, under free movement, in person or use BLS (another VFS-like organization). The visa is free with less documentation and sometimes very fast. You will probably have to 'travel' through Spain for a longer time than in Portugal. Or Spain should be your 'first' point of entrance in Schengen visa free area.
