Star,
if you were not living together or rather can not show that you were living together for 2 years then your chances of getting the 10points are very slim. I am sure they know about the differences in cultures around the world, which is why they actually give points for umarried partners. this becoz in some countries people stay together for more than 5 years, buy a house together have children etc, without getting married. so they see these as being the same as a marriage.
I know it does sound unfair but i think even if they did not consider co-habitation, the requirement would still have been two years of marriage
8.6.3 If you are applying as a married couple you must supply a marriage certificate/ licence plus three items of correspondence of the kind, or from the sources, listed below, which have been addressed to you and your spouse over the past two years, and which clearly show that you have been living together at the same address. If you have not received any such correspondence that is addressed to you both, jointly, it is acceptable to provide two items addressed to one of you and one item addressed to the other partner so long as they show the same address
The only advantage of being married comes when you are applying for entry Clearance
