some time ago i left my paid job to try to set up a business, but realised this wouldn't work out a couple of months on - i didn't even register myself as self-employed by then cos i wasn't earning any money (and i still don't know if i should have done in this situation). eventually (after 3.5 months) i just got back to the same job where i was. so i'm kind of worried that the HO will want to know exactly what i was doing during this time and i basically left no trace. do you think this will be a problem for my hsmp extension? thank you very much.

It should not be a problem as long as you could reach the minimu points.

However, it is a good idea thast you explain the gap months, just be honest that at the time you are not working.

Just make you aware people might do this for tax evaasion, they deliberately hide they xx months because at the the time they do not pay taxes. For instance, high flyer who could meet point thereshold even with just 6 months (say) salary.
