Restricted Professions

Post by Milestone » Sat Apr 03, 2004 6:24 pm

I am a passive user of this group for quite some time. This forum is extremely useful. I am a lawyer and working in a transport company as legal adviser for last 11 years. I want to apply for HSMP. I have two questions. Anyone can share his views but I will request to Mr. Kayalami especially for the answer.
1. Am I eligible to apply. I want to know if there are any restrictions to work as a lawyer in UK. Is it necessary to be eligible to work in the selected profession before one can apply for HSMP or not.
2 . Can I get 50 points for experience as my job is a specialized job

1. If you want to be an in-house corporate lawyer, you should be qualified somewhere, but not necessarily in the UK. For example if you work for a US multinational with offices in London, you probably should be admitted to the Bar Association in one of the States (or wherever you got your law degree), but that's really all your company would require.

On the other hand, if you wanted to practice English law either with a law firm or as a sole practitioner, you would probably need to be a member of the Law Society.

2. Yes you can claim 50 points.
