Does distance-learning course qualify as Masters for Tier-1

Post by InUkOnHsmp » Mon Nov 23, 2009 6:07 pm

Hi Forum,

I have been in the UK since beginning of 2008 on HSMP and have recently got extension till 2013.

I have a bachelor's degree, but it worked this time as it was an extension from HSMP to Tier1.

Now to apply for ILR, I might have to extend again depending on the rules at that time. For extending again, I might have to get a masters degree, again depending on the rules. Hence, I am planning to prepare myself for the event by securing a master degree in the meanwhile.

Now I am looking at an elite Indian university for a distance learning masters course. Does anyone have any idea if such a course will qualify as Masters for a Tier1 application?

Any inputs appreciated.

Regards

Few people in this forum suggested that if you were on HSMP for the first time then same rule will apply. Frustrating thing is there is no rule as such. May be asking a Solicitor might help? rather than going for Master 's just for visa

I don't think you have to worry about Masters Degree for the same of extension. You were granted initially based on Bachelors and you should be fine in future too unless rules changes drastically.

Thanks Chetan and Pkumar.

I know I might be able to pull through on the basis of my Bachelor's degree. I am thinking of this option because:

1) I dont want to be caught unawares if some rules changes and I am caught in the change.
2) People like me need an excuse to go for higher education and this is a good enough excuse:).

Any inputs would be great!

I think the attitude to go for higher studies has no relation to how skilled a person is.

Many people prefer to get industry experience rather than higher qualifications, which is what I have done till this point in my career, but in certain situations a higher qualification is a must and thus I am thinking of going for a masters.

I went to the points calculator and did not see any way to specify whether the course was distance learning, full time or part time, so may be it would qualify.

The only definitive way of knowing this is to call the HO, right?

Gauging the right time to plan for future(education/earnings/experience/job change) was something my line of thought when I said "Highly Skilled"; which most people fail to notice and then struggle while extension/renewal.

Besides, as long as the PBS calculator and NARIC acknowledge it, it doesn't matter if the degree was distant learning or not?

same issue

Post by ramesh1 » Tue Nov 24, 2009 11:29 am

Forum people same issue with me i got my tier-1 with bachelors degree and wondering in future the rules might change during my ext. I had in-fact opened a separate topic for this i believ i should merge it here:

http://www.immigrationboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=47737

I have a desire to do masters at abroad and would like to use this oppurtunity to study part-time in UK as under tier-1 i can do partime.

I hope that part-time masters degree from an elite UK university would do good for my EXT?
