NARIC-Inquiry about letter of comparability and english req

Post by bagula_bhagat » Tue May 04, 2010 9:36 am

Hi All,

I have completed my Bachelor of Arts (Pass) course from Delhi University in 2001 and want to apply for UK Naric Letter of Comparability to score 'Qualification' and 'English Language' points. Can you please input your ideas on my following questions:

1. I have registred myself on UK Naric website and taken a reference but yet to send my documents photocopy and pay the fee. Will they only start the process once I send them these details?

2. For 'English Language Requirement' points, do I submit a letter from my college confirming that my language of instructions for studies was english. Will this be enough?

3. I am planning to apply for my Tier-1 in 'August 2010'. Is this okey to get 'Letter of Comparability' from UK Naric now.

Thanks

Suggest that you read the Tier 1 (General) policy guidance *carefully* to understand whether letter from NARIC is required.

1. Yes
2. Yes , Letter from university is required to be on safe side
3. If University of Delhi is mentioned then there is no need.

Read para 192 of the Tier 1 policy guidance which will make it clear to you that any such letter from university will not fulfil the conditions mentioned therein.

Also read para 192-198, which are equally important to understand the documentary evidence(s) needed to prove English language proficiency.

Hi,

I have read following -

191: 'Degree taught in English' "An applicant may provide evidence 191. that he/she holds a degree which is equivalent to United Kingdom Bachelors level and which was taught or researched in English to a particular level as evidence of his/her English language ability."

Q:- Does above not mean that evidence provided to prove above would be accepted?

192: "The degree must be recognised by National Academic Recognition Information Centre for the United Kingdom (UK NARIC) as equivalent to a United Kingdom Bachelor’s degree"

Note: I believe a bachelors degree from Delhi University is considered to be equivalent to UK Bachelors. Moreover DU is on the list of PBS calculator. Para 192 nowhere says that a letter issued by the Uni/College is not acceptable.

194: "Where the degree was taken in another country we will always assess it using the points based calculator on our website. The calculator contains information from UK NARIC on whether overseas qualifications are equivalent to United Kingdom Bachelors level or higher."

Note: DU is on the list of PBS calculator. However calculator does not give points for english language. (This is confusing)

They make it confusing. 192 they say evidence to confirm degree taught in english is acceptable and 194 if PBS Calc does not give points then you can't claim it.

What a BS!!

Will a letter from University confirm that your degree is recognised by NARIC as being equivalent to UK bachelors and (also) that its been taught in English language at a standard comparable to level C1 of CEFR??

If PBS calculator does not give you points for English language, it means that your degree has not been taught to a standard comparable to level C1 of CEFR - even though the PBS calculator might award you points for a "UK equivalent bachelors" degree (qualification).

In this case, I believe the only alternative available is to pass one of the recognized English language exams.

One needs to understand that UKBA PBS calculator uses NARIC database to calculate points for qualifications and English language.

So if a qualification is not listed in the PBS calculator (in either qualification or english language section), it is unlikely that a letter from NARIC will state that the degree meets the standard (qualification and/or English, as the case may be).

This said, no harm in spending a few quids and knowing for sure.

Hi , as per your questions , here are the best answers in my opinion ..

1. I have registred myself on UK Naric website and taken a reference but yet to send my documents photocopy and pay the fee. Will they only start the process once I send them these details?

You have to make an online registration with UK NARIC and send them the scanned documents . It is much faster .. but still you have to wait 3 weeks to get the letter .. As you are already registered , you have to send them documents and fee ... they will not start without it of course!

2. For 'English Language Requirement' points, do I submit a letter from my college confirming that my language of instructions for studies was english. Will this be enough?

As explained by friends here , you have to check your degree with English requirement in calculator .. if you are awarded points than it's ok!
on the another hand you have to pass IELTS with score greater than 6.

3. I am planning to apply for my Tier-1 in 'August 2010'. Is this okey to get 'Letter of Comparability' from UK Naric now.

Yes , for sure
Thanks

Similar situation

Post by hema177 » Sat May 08, 2010 2:21 am

Hi,

I am also planning to apply for the Tier 1 visa in August this year. I too have a B.A. Pass degree from University of Delhi and English was one of the compulsory subjects. However, the PBS calculator does not award points for English Language for BA although it awards points for Qualification, which is very strange and confusing.

I'd be really grateful if you let me know what you're planning to do in this case. I will be sending my documents to NARIC for assessment of English equivalency but I doubt if they will send a positive assessment/ award points for English since it is not awarded points in the PBS.

Please let me know.

Thanks,

Hema

Ok, thanks for that. I read the Para 198 of the tier 1 guidance and the paras preceding and following as well.

The good news is that the PBS does award points for the English Language Requirement to my Master's degree. However, this is also the degree that I am using for getting points under the Qualifications requirement.

My question now is

a) Does it necessarily have to be a bachelor's degree for getting the English Language points? The guidance says-

"191. that he/she holds a degree which is equivalent to United Kingdom Bachelors level and which was taught or researched in English to a particular level as evidence of his/her English language ability."

and also says -

"195. points based calculator confirms that the degree:
meets or exceeds the equivalent level to • United Kingdom Bachelors degree; and
was taught to a competent standard of • English equivalent to level C1 on the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEFR)."

b) And if the answer to a) above is "No - You can use a Master's degree too" then can the same degree be used for getting points for both the Qualification Requirement and the English Language Requirement ? The guidance doesn't say you can't use the same for both, but I just need to be sure.

Apologies if this has been answered before, but I searched in the forum and couldn't find any posts (maybe my search criteria was wrong)

Thanks in advance,

Hema

I found the solution!!!!

There's nothing in the guidance notes but the Application Form says:

"6.6 Put a cross (x) in the relevant box to confirm how you verified your degree was taught in English

The points-based calculator shows the degree was taught
in English; Go to Question 6.9

The points-based calculator does not show the qualification
is equivalent to a United Kingdom degree but a UK NARIC
letter and/or certificate is enclosed; Go to Question 6.7

The points-based calculator shows the qualification is
equivalent to a United Kingdom degree but does not show
the qualification was taught in English; Go to Question 6.7

6.8 Put a cross (x) in the relevant box to indicate what evidence has been supplied
Original degree certificate; Original academic transcript.

6.7 Put a cross (X) in the box to confirm you have included a letter from your university confirming that the degree was >>>
taught in English.

Balle Balle!! Now all I have to do is get a letter from IIT and that's it! Does anyone have a template that I could refer to? I'd be really grateful.

Anyone else facing the same problem - I hope this helps you.

Cheers,

Hema
