Stay out of UK during first year

I am confused about the maximum allowed stay out of UK for the first year. There are not guidelines as how much minimum stay is required in UK when applying for the extension.

Some says it should not be more than 90 days, if this is the case when does the countdown starts, date of issue of EC or the date of entry into UK.

Anyone passed thru the same circumstances , pls reply.
