Qualifying Degree in Hindi

Post by Tier1_Seeker1 » Sat Jul 31, 2010 10:17 pm

Hi,
With reference to Tier 1 Visa Application for UK please help me with the below queries:
a) My Qualifying Bachelor's Degree Certificate that was awarded by University of Lucknow is in Hindi (not English). However Graduation mark-sheet corresponding to this degree & Provisional Degree is in English. Let me know if I can submit the Degree in Hindi as a Qualifying exam proof.
If not, do I need to get it translated. Who is authorized to prepare such translated document. I am in Bangalore...Any suggested place / person will be of great help.

b) My Degree & University figure in the PBS database while I select my qualification. Is this an ample proof that my degree is considered to be taught in English? If not, do I need to produce a letter from my College / University that the degree was taught in English. If yes, please suggest me the desired format & other requirements.

Thank in advance for all the help!

1. Check with local VAC / BHC which (if any) translators are certified by the local BHC. Alternatively, contact University (or issuing authority) to translate the degree in English and issue you a certified copy.
2. Read the policy guidance carefully before getting down to using PBS calculator.

Hi sushdmehta,

Thanks for your response.
Where can I get current policy about 'proof of Degree taught in English'. Please send me the link. I tried few links in the old posts but they seem to have expired.

Also suggest me the best approach / valid certificate to be produced... to gain 10 points of English language

Hi sushdmehta, aruni4470 & valued members

I appreciate all your help & valuable inputs :)

Here is where I stand after checking my degree(s) & reading through the guides including http://bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/siteconten ... idance.pdf

The PBS calculator has the following sections
A) Age, B) Qualification, C) Earnings D) UK Experience, E) English Skills, F) Maintenance & G) Summary

I have two degree(s), B. Sc (PCM) 3 yrs completed in year 2002, & LLB 3 years completed in 2005 from the 'University of Lucknow'.

Both these degrees are present in the PBS Calculator in Section B i.e. "Qulaification" & Section E "English Skills".

I have below 2 queries w.r.t to the above information

1) My B.Sc. Degree is in Hindi while my LLB degree is a dual language (Hindi + English) degree.
Please note the transcript is similar to:
First paragraph written in Hindi while the second paragraph (under paragraph in Hindi) is a translation of the first confirming the degree & clearly showing
applicant’s name, title of the award; date of the award and name of the University.

Considering above scenraio, is it advisable to produce my LLB degree as a qualification degree rather than getting my B. Sc Degree translated in English.

2) Here is what I came while reading the Eng Lang requirements of Tier guide
http://bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/siteconten ... idance.pdf

Point 191 & 192 of Page 34-35
"Degree taught in English
191. An applicant may provide evidence that he/she holds a degree which is equivalent to United Kingdom Bachelors level and which was taught or researched in English to a particular level as evidence of his/her English language ability.
192. The degree must:
•be recognised by National Academic Recognition Information Centre for the United Kingdom (UK NARIC) as equivalent to a United Kingdom Bachelor’s degree; and
•have been taught in English to a standard comparable to that of level C1 on the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEFR). Details can be found on the Council of Europe website at http://www.coe.int/t/dg4/linguistic/CADRE_EN.asp.

Further points 194 to 198 read as :-
194. Where the degree was taken in another country we will always assess it using the points based calculator on our website. The calculator contains information from UK NARIC on whether overseas qualifications are equivalent to United Kingdom Bachelors level or higher.
195.Applicants can claim points when the points based calculator confirms that the degree:
meets or exceeds the equivalent level to • United Kingdom Bachelors degree; and
was taught to a competent standard of • English equivalent to level C1 on the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEFR).

Checking qualifications
196. An applicant should check his/her degree by referring to the points based calculator on our website at: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/pointscalculator
197. Where the points based calculator is unable to confirm these details, points will not be awarded for the qualification in question.
198. Where the applicant is unable to find details of their qualification on the points based calculator, UK NARIC will not be able to verify whether a qualification satisfies the English Language requirement. In these circumstances, applicants should either present an alternative qualification from the points based calculator if they possess one, or select an alternative means of satisfying the English Language requirement.

Considering points 191 to 198 & since my degree(s) is present / selectable from the PBS database under 'English Skills' section, is it safe to conclude that I am meeting English Language requirements under the header "Degree taught in English".

Thanks for all your help & support! :)

1. As a person who can read Hindi you know that in your LLB degree certificate the text in English is an exact translation of the text in Hindi. But anyone who cannot read Hindi will not know so - and no one knows (at least I don't) if the caseworkers at local BHCs are natives of the country or British expats. Therefore there is an element of risk involved ... and a non-Hindi speaking caseworker may question that an official translation of a degree which is not entirely in English has not been submitted. If I were you, I would get an official translation done from the issuing body / BHC approved translators to eliminate any risk.

2. If LLB qualification gives you points for both qualifications and English language, there is absolutely no need to submit any additional evidence for any other / additional qualifications that you may possess.

3. Letter from University stating the degree was taught in English is as good as toilet paper.

regards
