G1 Visa Dependent

Post by footballdj » Thu May 31, 2007 6:00 pm

HI everyone,
I am currently a G1 Visa Dependent, my father works for the UN and as a dependent of him I am able to work here in the US until I finish my higher education and live here until I am 23 as a dependent. (Please correct me if I am wrong)
I have pretty much spent my entire life here in NY, went to middle school here, high school and I am now entering my senior year of college. Once I finish college I will no longer be able to work. I have interned at such companies such as Smith Barney, Merrill Lynch and even the NY Yankees.
What options do I have for staying here? Getting a H1 Visa is very hard to do, and anyway would only allow me to be here for 6 years. As far as I am concerned I am American, what other options do I have, I have been here for 11 years with all my education also being here am i just expected to return to England where I have had no life or work experience? Any help would be great. Thank You.

I don't know about your particular situation, but it's incorrect to say that an H1 visa would only allow you to stay there for 6 years. With an H1 visa you can apply for a green card, and eventually become a citizen. What skills/qualifications have you got? Have you considered getting a master's degree? Every year an additional number of H1 visas are set aside for people with a US master's degree or higher. You may also want to ask in the following forum, where you are more likely to find people familiar with US immigration issues

Thank You for the help and I will post in the Forum you suggested. As far as work experience I have interned over my college career for Media groups, Merrill Lynch, Smith Barney the Yankees and a few more smaller day to day jobs. As far as skills goes its my college education and the skills I have learnt in those internships. Thanks for the info regarding the H1 Visa I just wasn't sure about it because of how hard it is to get, I begin my permanent job search this XMAS and most jobs disregard you as soon as you mention H1 to them.
