british passport required to surrender india passport ?

Post by tusharagrawal » Sat Sep 07, 2013 11:34 am

It is possible that someone has no travel plans after naturalisation and hence doesn't apply for UK passport say for a year.

But Indian passport must be surrendered within 3 months ... so can this be done without british passport ?

I understand where you are coming from, but the Surrender Certificate Application lists copy of the British Passport as one of the mandatory documents. The surrender certificate too shows the number and date of issuance of one's British Passport. You may want to contact the VFS helpline for further confirmation.

The 3 month is the grace period for travel using Indian passport.
It can be retained upto 3 years without incurring any penalty as long as it was not used for travel.

Thanks push and ban.s for your responses.

Its theoretical and don't want to waste your time on this, but someone may still not want a british passport after 3 years - in this case, as push mentioned, its best to contact VFS.
