Three nationalities?

Post by svandersluis » Mon Sep 18, 2006 7:26 pm

Hello,

I am a dual citizen of Canada and the US. I have resided legally in the UK for most of the past 15 years and am applying for UK citizenship on 2 Oct (4 yrs work permit, 1 yr ILR). I have read that the UK will allow dual citizenship, but does anyone know whether I can take UK citizenship as a third nationality or will I be asked to give up one of the other two?

Btw, I am applying via the NCS at Essex and will keep the group updated on processing times.

Many thanks,

Sarah

Your situation is shockingly similar to mine, and I'm likely to have three citizenships by 2010 or so (Canada, US, UK). None of the three countries really minds. So have as many as you like. Seriously.

The only one that really gets a bit snarky is the US. You need to keep filling out your yearly tax returns and entering and leaving the US on your US passport. Technically, not doing these things will get you into trouble (see Boris Johnson). Then again, if you never plan to live in the US again and have no US assets and are not looming large on the US spy/watch list, you're most likely going to be fine.

So again...enjoy your three nationalities. Any chance on marrying an Aussie or a Kiwi? They allow multiple citizenships as well, and then you'll be able to do the Anglo-Saxon quintfecta and live in most of the English-language speak-o-sphere.
