Unique Situation - US moving to UK - Need advice

Post by juliehicks75 » Fri Oct 06, 2006 4:33 pm

I have already been granted a fiance visa for the UK and plan to move there in mid November to live with my fiance. Our plan is to have the wedding in a few months, and then after that I would get a work permit and look for a job in the UK. Interestingly, a few weeks after I was granted my visa and bought my tickets to go to the UK for 13 November, my former employer - a US company with a UK location - got wind that I was planning to move there and they are now offering me a job. They are willing to sponsor me for the work permit because they want me to start ASAP, which is great because I have no intention of moving up the date for getting married. I am worried though that the fact I already have a fiance visa will cause issues with getting a work permit through the US company. Does anyone know what issues this situation might present?

That's not the normal way to go about things. You can't work with a fiance visa, but once you get married and get a spouse visa, you don't need a work permit.

It takes much longer to get permanent residence from a work permit compared to a spouse visa (5 years vs 2). And you need permanent residence before you can think about naturalisation as a British citizen.
